This
film is 65 years old this year (it is now eligible for a free
bus pass) but is still one of the best films ever made. I'm still
not sure why Bogart was considered a heart throb as he was certainly
no oil painting, may be it was the rugged, dangerous, dependable
manliness that did it? Ingrid Bergman on the other hand is 100%
gorgeous (especially in this film). Both are superb as this film,
as is the terrific supporting cast.
Even
though this film has been lampooned many times, it is a film that
holds up incredibly well. The emotional ending where Rick decides
to let his lover leave is surely one of the defining scenes in
cinematic history, and still seems powerfully today. The question
is should he have let her go?
