The top 3 DVD releases 18th November 2008

1. David Lynch - The Lime Green Set

Extraordinary box set includes: Eraserhead (remastered) + soundtrack; The Short Films Of David Lynch; The Elephant Man (+ exclusive extras disc); Wild At Heart (plus a disc deleted / extended scenes); Industrial Symphony no. 1 (exclusive); Blue Velvet (with new Lynch approved 5.1 sound mix) Dumbland (an exclusive mystery disc from Lynch archives) plus a 40 page collectors picture book. Wow.

2. The Happiness of the Katakuris

Hmmm. How to describe this 2001 film from cult director Takashi Miike. How about Surreal / Black comedy / zombie horror? or a re imagining through unknown dimensions of The Sound Of Music under the influence of a particularly scary acid trip? Whatever, this is s a seriously enjoyable film.

3. Derek Jarman Collection (Sebastiane / The Tempest / War Requiem / Derek)

The 3 films collected here (and the documentary Derek - utilising Jarman's home movies & material), are a fitting tribute to the wonderful British film director Derek Jarman; undoubtedly one of the most imaginative, adventurous and uncompromising directors in cinema history.

The best of the rest of other DVD releases 18th November 2008

Mister Lonely

Harmony Korine directs this existential musing set in a commune of celebrity look-a-likes, who are busy peeling away their own characters to fully inhabit those they impersonate. A great cast including Samantha Morton (how underrated is she?), James Fox and Werner Herzog.

Up the Yangtze

Yung Chang's superb and fascinating documentary on the changing face of the great Yangtze river and its inhabitants, in the light of the worlds largest damming process to make way for a massive hydro-electric plant.

Goya

East German masterpiece from 1971 by director Konrad Wolf. A fantastic biopic of the brilliant Spanish painter Goya.

A Wonderful Night in Split

Set in the medieval streets of Split in Croatia on New Years eve night, this multi-strand film noir follows some dark tales of human nature.

Of Love and Eggs

This gentle comedy from Indonesia 2004, comes from director Garin Nugroho. A clever film weaving a fairy tale quality of faith against realities of slum conditions.

Gonzo: The Life and Work of Dr. Hunter S. Thompson

Rising star of the documentary genre director Alex Gibney (Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room and Taxi to the Dark Side) makes a superb attempt at a biography of the over the edge writer / journalist Hunter S. Thompson.

Also released this week: Fanfan La Tulipe, Wendy and Lucy and The Wedding Director

The top 3 Blu-ray releases 18th November 2008

1. The Third Man

One can perhaps make an argument about that necessity of releasing Black and White films on the HD formats, but taking the cinematography on this film justifies its position alone. Also the improved soundtrack, containing the wonderful and instantly recognisable Harry Lime Theme is an absolute joy.

2. Paris, je t'aime

20 shorts from an array of directors such as The Coen brothers, Gus Van Sant and Wes Craven. Some of the shorts work much better than others, but as a complete work they actually hang together incredibly well.

3. The Last Emperor

Bernardo Bertolucci's epic from 1987 is one of modern cinemas most visually stunning pieces. Tailor made for the digitally restored Blu-ray generation.

The Man Who Fell to Earth

The genius director Nicolas Roeg's other-worldly strange tale starring David Bowie at his other-worldly strangest.

Heathers

Perfect end of the 1980's dark teen comedy flick starring those stars currently residing in the box marked "where are they now?" - Winona Ryder, Shannen Doherty and Christian Slater.

Bottle Rocket

Wes Anderson's debut feature is far less well know than his future features. But this tremendous film signposted the full array of his armory even this early on. This Blu-ray edition includes the original short he made of Bottle Rocket.

Revolver

Madonna's ex, Guy Richie, is a one trick pony (undoubtedly), but he can make a decent Brit gangster flick - this one is his third best and its still pretty good.

Priceless

Audrey Tatou stars in this superior romantic comedy. Sometime it seems that the film is style rather than content heavy, but for all that its very well made (especially given the genre its operating in).

Marvel Blu-ray 3-Pack

With the interest in comic book adaptations surely reaching saturation point we get a collection of 3 films: Fantastic Four; Fantastic Four - Rise of the Silver Surfer and the directors cut of Daredevil.

Also released this week: 8 Mile, Wall-E (Two-Disc) and The Stendhal Syndrome

The top 3 TV releases (all formats) 18th November 2008

1. The Complete Monty Pythons Flying Circus - Collectors Edition Megaset

Every episode and loads of very good extras are included in this 21 disc collection. Includes all the classics: Dead Parrot; Ministry Of Silly Walks; Lumberjack Song and The Spanish Inquisition sketch. "Dinsdale, Dinsdale."

2. Doctor Who: The Complete Fourth Series

Tom Baker may have been the best Doctor ever, but David Tennant is a close second. Sure the new shows can sometimes be low thought and high on chase sequences, but there is a real craft that has gone into the sub-plots that run through the series.

3. The Odd Couple - The Complete Series, Seasons 1-5

All 5 season of probably one of the best made and most consistently funny comedies ever made for television. They don't just not make 'em like this anymore - they don't even try now.

The best of the rest TV releases (all formats) 18th November 2008

It seems like in TV you can never have enough medical crime series, this is one of the very best and is collected here is a 3 series volume. Series 3 is also available on its own and is the best series so far.

The Chomsky Sessions: Noam Chomsky On The World

A dissident when dissent was a dirty words, now he's one of the most respected political and social activists. Endlessly fascinating and thought provoking.

The Universe: The Complete Season 1 (Blu-ray)

The truly fascinating and ever expanding series from the History Channel. A godsend for us who can't understand Stephen hawking's books. Stunning on the Blu-ray format.

The Tudors - Season 2

A superb second season of the highly rated recent TV series centering around the life of the young King Henry 8th. Superbly scripted and cast. Released on both Blu-ray and DVD.

Doctor Who: The Infinite Quest

Star Trek: The Original 3 Series (Remastered)

This release is the original series of the shows, but enhanced with some special effects to bring them into the modern age. All tastefully done thankfully, so it will only upset the most puritan of Trekkies (in their millions).

Also released this week: Charmed Complete Collection and The A&E Adventure Collection DVD Set.
