The top 3 DVD releases 21st October 2008

1. Flight of the Red Balloon

Inspired by Albert Lamorisse's classic beautiful 1956 Oscar Winning extended short The Red Balloon about a boy and his balloon. Director Hou Hsiao Hsien expands the main elements of the original to include the child's mother, Suzanne (Juliette Binoche) and Song (a Taiwanese student) who is hired to help care for the boy.

2. Six in Paris

In 1965 six new wave directors were asked to submit short films about Paris for a new project, this magnificent collection was the result. Includes films by Eric Rohmer, Jean-Luc Goddard, Claude Chabrol, Jean Douchet, Jean Rouch and Jean-Daniel Pollet.

3. Eclipse Series 13-Kenji Mizoguchi's Fallen Women

Japanese director Kenji Mizoguchi's (Sansho the Bailiff) four film collection themed around the plight of women in the male dominated Japanese society. Includes Osaka Elegy, Sisters of the Gion, Women of the Night and Street of Shame. Each of them are amazing films and way ahead of the times.

The Incredible Hulk (Three-Disc Special Edition)

Great cast (Tim Roth, Liv Tyler, William Hurt, Edward Norton). Good story. Only let down is with some truly very poorly realised CGI. Some absolutely superb extra features on this 3 disc edition.

Mondays in the Sun

Directed by Fernando Leon de Aranoa, this story follows five unemployed shipyard workers who may are down on their luck but still have the hope of better days yet to come.

Casino Royale (40th Anniversary Edition)

There are few films more schizophrenic than this 1967 comedic take on the famous James Bond novel. Folklore has it that this money pit of a film was a hugel absolutely chaotic production from the start until its eventual completion. It shows.

The Strangers

There have been so many thrillers released in recent years, very few of them even appraoch being good. This is one of the very few truly unremitting, nerve shredding, edge of the seat thrillers to have been released in recent years.

Casino Royale (Three-Disc Collector's Edition)

Only a few years ago it was rumored that we'd seen the last Bond movie, now the franchise is in safe hands with it's reinvigoration of the character of a very much darker Bond in the very capable hands of Daniel Craig.

The Lazarus Project

Decent psycological thriller. I still cant really work out why but this one reminds me of The Butterfly Effect. Solid if unspectacular, but enough going on here to make it worth a few viewings.

The Last Man on Earth - In COLOR

Quite what the point of colourising classic Black & White movies is we have never worked out. Luckily this classic Vincent Price post apocalyptic zombie horror from 1964 also has the Black & White version on it, and beautifully restored too.

Up in the World

Part of the Norman Wisdom collection. British king of Pathos Wisdom stars in his susual Pirkin persona as the little man trying to win a lady's heart against the odds. There are a couple of scenes here that are simply hilarious - the clowning on a drum kit during a refined luncheon and his antics during a soccer match - both emphasise his huge comic talent.

The top 3 Blu-ray releases 21st October 2008

1. Sweeney Todd

Tim Burton's genius knows few bounds, and certainly his mokney musical horror is up there with his finest work. Lets say it again, Burtons work (with its emphasis on the visual aesthetics ) seems purpose made for Blu-ray.

2. James Bond Blu-ray Collection Six-Pack

Its great to see James bond appearing on Blu-ray. However, this first collection of films is absolutely bizarre and totally random. The set includes: Dr. No; Die Another Day; Live and Let Die; For Your Eyes Only; From Russia with Love and Thunderball. Still some very great films here.

3. Incredible Hulk

Great cast (Tim Roth, Liv Tyler, William Hurt, Edward Norton). Good story. Only let down is with some truly very poorly realised CGI - which is even more apparent on the Blu-ray version.

Halloween

With Halloween just around the corner, the film Halloween remake gets a rather nice Blu-ray release. Also check out our Horror movie guide for our favourite Horror movies.

Casino Royale (Collector's Edition, 2 discs)

Only a few years ago it was rumored that we'd seen the last Bond movie, now the franchise is in safe hands with it's reinvigoration of the character of a very much darker Bond in the very capable hands of Daniel Craig.

Kiss of the Spider Woman

This landmark movie from 1985 given a truly superb Blu-ray release with some tremendous and decidedly meaty extra features - why can't all Blu-ray releases be as thorough?

Red Desert

AKA Il Deserto Rosso. A truly remarkable film from director Michelangelo Antonioni. This 1964 film is one of the most atmospheric and chilling piece ever made. Starring Richard Harris and Monica Vitti.

The Breed

Superb horror movie from 2006. A group of girl friends fly away to a deserted island for the weekend, only to find that the island is run by a pack of flesh eating wild dogs.

The Strangers

See above DVD release for details.

The top 3 TV releases (all formats) 21st October 2008

1. Family Guy, Vol. 6

12 episodes from season 5 & 6 of the best and funniest animated series ever. The episodes keep getting funnier by the season. Also out is the complete collection - if you haven't been buying them volume by volume.

2. Sold Out: A Threevening with Kevin Smith

Director of Clerks, Jay & Silent Bob, Dogma and all those other quite similar films. This one man show is full of the story of the making of those films and the stars who were in them. Actually really funny and very interesting.

3. The Other Boleyn Girl (2003 BBC Version)

A few years before the big screen adaptation of the novel there was this fine TV adaptation by BBC TV - which is superior in virtually every way to the film.

The Man from U.N.C.L.E. - The Complete Series

One of the greatest TV series of the 1960s. Every episode here on 41 discs and over 5,600 minutes of sheer TV heaven.

Family Guy The Complete Collection (Stewie Head Packaging)

The complete seasons of one of the finest comedy series ever. Those clever things have now added some exclusive things and given us "Stewie's Head packaging" to make us buy it even though we've bought all the discs separately before. Damn you marketeers!

Route 66 - The Complete Second Season

Nostalgia all the way in this landmark series from the 1960s, I don't think there has been anything quite like this since and I'm amazed (and grateful) that it's being released on DVD.

Knight Rider: The Complete Series

Every episode from back in the days when a talking car was unique - now you can't shut the stupid things up.

The Incredible Hulk: The Complete Series

Every episode of the angry shirt ripping metamorphasising TV series- why wouldn't that journalist just leave him alone. Season 5 also available separately, which is how we'll be buying it as we have bought all the others seasons up to now.
