The top 3 DVD releases 6th October 2008

1. A Secret

This latest film from French director Claude Miller is also something of a secret, but it is well worth tracking down. It tells the personal story of a teenage boy who learns shocking secrets about his parents' lives during World War II. Being Jews in occupied France, their lives were under constant threat by the Nazi regime and they are forced to make decisions that they have to live with. A great film in it's own right that has certain thematic shades of Cache by Haneke running through it.

2. The Sandwich Man

Former Goon Michael Bentine took the title role in this great little film from 1966. Bentine stars as a sandwich board advertiser and walks around London observing and being observed (beautifully observed as it goes). The supporting cast of this film reads like a Who's Who of 60s comedy talent featuring the likes of Harry H. Corbett, Bernard Cribbins, Alfie Bass, Peter Jones, John le Mesurier, Warren Mitchell, Jeremy Lloyd, Burt Kwouk Norman Wisdom, Suzy Kendall, Terry Thomas and Dora Bryan.

.

3. War Dance

Documentary features have recently come right back to the forefront in Cinema. This film is one of the most genuinely powerful documentaries in recent years. It follows a group of Ugandan schoolchildren in their quest to participate in the annual Kampala Music Festival. Against the back drop of the country's dreadful and horrific recant history, these school children show the hope and determination to write their own history and live out a better life.

Tim Burton's genius now in collectors edition in beautiful Blu-ray hi def. We are so aching for the release of the 3D version.

A film worth buying a Blu-ray player for. Visually stunning film that looks breathtaking in the new format.

Cute comedy horror fun for all the family. You know all about it.

Werner Herzog adapts his own fascinating documentary Little Dieter Needs To Fly into a fully fledged, and quite brilliant, movie.

The Business

Directed by Nick Love starring Danny Dyer - so you know exactly the type of movie that this is. 'Nuff said.

The top 3 TV releases (all formats) 6th October 2008

1. Summer Heights High & We Can Be Heroes Box Set

Summer Heights High is, without doubt, the best comedy since The Office. Featuring rich bitch Ja'mie, Johan the school (or cool) bully and Mr G the egocentric assistant to the head of drama. Like totally random.

Agatha Christie's Marple Series 3

Geraldine Mckewan concludes her portrayal of Marple with some excellent stories. Its a shame that she is hanging up her hat and cape.

The Simpsons - Series 11

This is probably the peak of The Simpsons powers, before the weakening scripts started to set in. Enjoy here Homer killing Ned, Moe the soap star, and Homer's motorcycle gang.

The Other Boleyn Girl (TV)

A few years before the big screen adaptation of the novel there was this fine TV adaptation - which is superior in virtually every way to the film.
